A su lado se encuentran sus proveedores, Berria y FullWear, así como Rotor o Spiuk, a quienes Pino presuntamente presionó para dar veracidad a su coartada, pidiéndoles que asegurasen que los pagos ya estaban hechos ante las dudas que se habían generado en el seno del equipo. Algunos de los patrocinadores, incluso, han emitido comunicados apoyando a los que realmente han dado al cara por el equipo: Juanjo Oroz, Salva Guardiola, Mikel Bizkarra, Pablo Urtasun, entrenando todavía juntos en el norte, o Fran Reyes y Andrés Cánovas.

Porque lo ayer acontecido supera, por mucho, el peor escenario que cualquiera de los miembros de la formación podían imaginar tras una concentración en Chile en la que habían pedido a Pino que abandonase los mandos del equipo. Así que ese parecía que fuese a ser el siguiente capítulo. El escenario, en España; la fecha, el 12 de febrero. Pero eso es lo último que se sabe de Juan Pablo Pino, quien incluso envió imágenes a Reyes por teléfono para demostrarle que embarcaba en un avión -ahora no se sabe dónde-. Porque cuando parecía que iba a subir al avión para realizar el traspaso de poderes, desapareció, y con él todo el dinero que los diferentes patrocinadores habían depositado en el proyecto (no existe constancia de que se llevara dinero de Viña Santa Cruz o Minera Candelaria).

“Por mucho que me paro a pensar qué le puede haber pasado a Pino por la cabeza, no logro entenderlo”, comentaba ayer Jesús Buendía, director deportivo de la estructura, en Demarraje. Pero la realidad es que Juan Pablo Pino tenía diferentes acusaciones de fraude en Chile antes de empezar la aventura transoceánica. Estafó a Gonzalo Garrido, representante de Trek en Chile, por unos 100.000 euros (él mismo lo reconoce en este artículo en El Mercurio). También lo hizo con la tienda Megapack Carbono -en la imagen de abajo, el posteo en Facebook del dueño, dando por finalizada su aventura empresarial acusando a Pino de estafa-.

Y no son las únicas cuestiones que circulan por ahí. Algunas de esas historias mencionan a Carlos Oyarzun, ex corredor de Movistar Team -2012-, como uno de los estafados o engañados por Pino. Según cuentan fuentes de la estructura, gente del bloque español, Oyarzun fue el único en avisarles antes de llegar el equipo a Chile hace unas semanas de que este era un estafador (lo hizo en septiembre). Tuvieron en cuenta su consejo pero, con todos los contratos firmados ante notario, no tuvieron más motivos para sospechar de Pino y siguieron adelante. Prácticamente todo el mundo lo hubiera hecho.

Tanto Buendía como Oroz comentaron ayer en el programa de radio Demarraje que la aventura en Chile fue un caos. “Era mentira tras mentira. Alargaba los pagos para poder tener material y sabíamos que algo no iba bien”, comentaba el director deportivo. Pero también ocurrió algo que incrementó mucho la preocupación dentro del grupo: en Chile se les acercaron varios corredores para advertirles que Pino no era trigo limpio. La preocupación aumentó. “Llegó el punto en el que la parte española nos plantamos“, concluía ayer Buendía.

De este modo, la situación actual puede describirse con una sola palabra. Incertidumbre. Todo está listo para que el equipo debute -de hecho este debut debía haberse producido el próximo 1 de marzo en la Vuelta a Murcia-, así que nadie en la formación chilena quiere darse por vencido. La Federación Chilena de Ciclismo y la Unión Ciclista Internacional han dado un plazo extraordinario para que se llegue a una solución, y desde el propio equipo se ponen un plazo de una semana para encontrar la financiación necesaria para que un proyecto nacido hace ya unos meses no muera antes de empezar a rodar (se supone que tienen ese plazo, pero podría haber margen para más tiempo).

El equipo tenía un presupuesto de unos 650.000 euros y Fran Reyes, en declaraciones a medios chilenos, argumenta que no es necesario cubrir todo ese presupuesto para salir adelante. Con unos 250.000 euros podrían salir mañana mismo a competir y hacerlo sin problemas a falta de alcanzar los 450.000 euros que mantienen de presupuesto mínimo, por eso buscan empresas españolas con intereses en sudamérica o empresas chilenas que quieran auspiciar el proyecto y “apuntarse” el tanto. El trabajo está hecho, la Federación Chilena, así como la UCI, apoya un proyecto con un bloque comprometido, unido y con ganas de correr.

Some of these sponsors have even made statemets showing their support to those who have done their best for the team: Juanjo Oroz, Salva Guardiola, Mikel Bizkarra, Pablo Urtasun, still training together in the North, as well as Fran Reyes and Andrés Cánovas.

The fact is that Monday’s news are worse than every member of the team could have ever imagine, after a team meeting in Chile when they have asked Pino to leave the head of the team. That seemed to be the next chapter for the squad. The place: Spain. The date: February 12th. But these are the latest news known of Pino, who even sent some photos to Reyes showing him taking a flight -a flight nobody knows its destination-. What looked like a transfer of responsibilities ended up with Pino dissapearing into the nowhere with all the money from the sponsors (there’s no evidence he took any money from Viña Santa Cruz or Minera Candelaria, though).

“As much as I think about it, I don’t get what’s going on with Pino”, said sports director Jesús Buendía, during the program Demarraje. But the truth is that Juan Pablo Pino had been already charged with accusations of fraud before starting this adventure. He cheated Gonzalo Garrido, Trek‘s sales representative in Chile, with a quantity of 100,000 euros (admitted by himself here). The same he did with the bike shop Megapack Carbono -below, the statement of the shop’s owner accusing Pino of cheating-.

There are more issues going out there. Some of them mention the former Movistar rider Carlos Oyarzun among the ones cheated by Pino. According to some Spanish sources from the PinoRoad team, Oyarzun was the only who warned them about Pino being a cheater. They listened to him, but the signed contracts didn’t look suspicious and they went ahead, as practically everybody would have done in their case.

Both Buendía and Oroz commented during Monday’s radio program Demarraje that the Chilean adventure was a chaos. “It was all lies. The payments were going postponed and we knew something was going wrong”, said the sports director. In addition, they even got more worried after some Chilean riders told them Pino wasn’t trustworthy. “We reached a point where the Spanish part of the team decided to quit“, Buendía concluded.

This way, the current situation can be described with one single word: uncertainty. It’s all ready for the team to make their debut -scheduled on the 1st of March, Vuelta a Murcia-, so nobody in the team wants to give up. Both Chilean Cycling Federation and the UCI have offered a longer deadline for a solution to be given, and the team have given themselves a week to find the required funds so the project is not dead even before starting to ride (they are supposed to have been given that deadline, but it might be longer).

The initial budget was 650,000 euros, but Fran Reyes have mentioned on Chilean media that they could go ahead with less money. They could even start riding tomorrow with 250,000 euros while they fight to reach 450,000 euros, the minimum bugdet they have stablished themselves. That’s why they’re looking for Spanish companies with interests in Chile, or some Chilean ones that want to support the project. The work is done; both the Chilean Cycling Federation and the UCI also support a serious team looking forward to ride.
