From your perspective as a photographer, what are your views on women’s cycling? Do you see any signs for a better future?

Yes, definitely. There are more, and better teams now, and it’s also very important that there are more pro men’s teams with women’s squads coming, even more in the future, I think. Also, the top riders are getting more attention so everything it’s becoming bigger and bigger.

How do you see the organization of Emakumeen Bira compared to other important international races?

It’s very, very good, both for the riders and the rest of us. For example, personally I didn’t expect to find wifi connection here in the bar and that makes my job a lot easier. They have a variety of drinks: water, cola… after the race, which is great for all of us -not every race offers this-. The roads are very well prepared, so the cars and vehicles are where they have to be. It’s very safe, and that’s essential, because safety is more important than the race itself.

It’s really good to hear that… to be honest, I didn’t expect such a positive answer.

Yeah, it really is!

Why did you become a cycling photographer?

Well, first of all because I’m a cyclist myself. I started to make photographs for the website of my sister. Then I got a bigger camera and, as there’s not so much coverage of the women’s races and I am there all the time it’s easier to do it. I work for the agency Cor Vos, which is very famous in Holland, and back when I started there was only coverage of the men’s races, basically. Now women’s races are getting more attention and that’s also important.

What has been the best and the worst thing that has happened to you while doing this work?

The worst was this year in Cittiglio, during the Trofeo Binda, because my camera was not well set up and I was taking blurry pictures all the time! The best one was also in Italy, last year in the Giro Donne, when I took a picture of Marianne riding with the pink jersey with the Colosseum of Rome as background and that, as a photographer, was really amazing.

I know the picture you’re talking about and it’s indeed amazing!

Yeah! And the best thing overall was being at the Olympic Games in London, but I couldn’t make photographs there, because one of the guys of our agency already had an acreditation, and the organization was very strict with the acreditations.

In your experience, which riders do you consider the most photogenic?

Scandinavian and Italian riders, Anna Sanchís [laughs], and… well, I can say more names but I have my personal favourites [laughs again]. There’s Evie Stevens who is always smiling and also Marta Bastianelli who always puts funny faces. So maybe it’s not exactly what you’re asking about, but they’re great when it comes to taking funny pictures.

The one with Sabrina Stultiens and Marianne Vos you took yesterday [Saturday 8th of June] on the podium was also good!

Yes, indeed. That’s a funny picture [laughs].

Let’s talk a little about your sister Marianne now. Being the older brother, when did you realize that she was going to be a phenomenon? I mean, when she still was very young…

My father always said that she could go very far, but how far, when didn’t know yet back then. When you’re very young it’s hard to make predictions, you don’t know when the progression is going to end, but by the time she was a junior rider we already saw she was extremely talented and was getting bigger and bigger. Last year, in 2012, she had an amazing season, with the Olympics and the Worlds…

Yes, basically a perfect year. Do you think she still can improve even more?

She can improve, but now she’s focusing on being better with the mountain bike so it’s more about improving in other disciplines.

But in road racing, do you think she already reached the top with the Olympics last year?

Yeah, yeah. But that’s the point, that was her main goal as a rider and everything that comes now on the road is basically a bonus for her.

Desde tu perspectiva como fotógrafo, ¿cómo ves el ciclismo femenino actualmente? ¿Ves señales que apunten hacia un futuro más brillante?

Sí, sin duda. Ahora hay más y mejores equipos, y también es muy importante que cada vez existan más escuadras masculinas que también tienen su equipo femenino, y va a haber incluso más en el futuro, creo. Las mejores corredoras también van recibiendo una mayor atención y todo va haciéndose cada vez más grande.

¿Cómo considerarías la organización de la Emakumeen Bira comparándola con la de otras carreras internacionales de renombre?

Es muy, muy buena, tanto para las corredoras como para el resto de nosotros. Por ejemplo, no esperaba encontrar conexión wifi en este bar junto al final de la etapa y la hay, lo que facilita mucho mi trabajo. Hay una buena variedad de bebidas: agua, cola… para tomar tras la carrera -algo que no todas las competiciones ofrecen-. Las carreteras están muy bien organizadas, de modo que la caravana y los vehículos están donde tienen que estar. Es muy segura, lo cual es esencial, pues la seguridad es incluso más importante que la propia carrera.

Está muy bien escuchar algo así… Sinceramente, no esperaba una respuesta tan positiva.

¡Realmente lo es!

¿Qué te hizo convertirte en un fotógrafo del ciclismo?

Bien, lo primero de todo fue el hecho de que yo mismo soy ciclista. Comencé a hacer fotos para la página web de mi hermana. Después adquirí una cámara más grande y, dado que no hay mucha cobertura de las carreras femeninas y que estoy en ellas continuamente, es más fácil hacerlo. Trabajo para la agencia Cor Vos, que es muy famosa en los Países Bajos, y cuando comencé básicamente sólo se cubría el ciclismo masculino. Hoy en día, las carreras femeninas van recibiendo más atención y eso también es importante.

¿Qué es lo mejor y lo peor que te ha pasado haciendo tu trabajo?

Lo peor ha sido este mismo año en Cittiglio, durante el Trofeo Binda, pues mi cámara no estaba bien configurada y ¡estuve tomando fotos borrosas todo el tiempo! Lo mejor también ha sido en Italia. Fue la temporada pasada en el Giro Donne, cuando tomé una imagen de Marianne con la maglia rosa y el Coliseo de Roma de fondo. Como fotógrafo, fue algo excepcional.

He visto la imagen a la que te refieres, y en efecto, ¡es genial!

¡Sí! Pero lo mejor de todo, en general, fue estar en los Juegos Olímpicos de Londres, pese a que no pude tomar fotografías allí, al estar uno de los miembros de nuestra agencia ya acreditado, pues eran muy estrictos con las acreditaciones.

A lo largo de tu experiencia, ¿a qué corredoras consideras más fotogénicas?

Escandinavas e italianas en general, Anna Sanchís [sonríe], y… bueno, podría decir más nombres, pero tengo mis propias favoritas [ríe de nuevo]. Luego está Evie Stevens, siempre sonriente, y también Marta Bastianelli que constantemente está poniendo caras divertidas. Tal vez no sea exactamente lo que me estabas preguntando, pero ambas son geniales cuando se trata de tomar fotos graciosas.

La que hiciste ayer [sábado 8 de junio] de Sabrina Stultiens y Marianne Vos en el podio también quedó muy bien.

Así es, esa es una foto divertida [ríe].

Hablemos ahora de tu hermana Marianne. Siendo el hermano mayor, ¿cuándo te diste cuenta por primera vez que ella iba a ser un fenómeno de la bicicleta?

Mi padre siempre decía que ella iba a llegar muy lejos, pero no sabíamos cómo de lejos por entonces. Cuando eres muy joven es difícil hacer predicciones, nunca sabes hasta dónde va a llegar la progresión, pero en la época que ella estaba en la categoría junior ya vimos claramente que tenía un talento extraordinario y estaba creciendo cada vez más. La temporada pasada, en 2012, tuvo un año impresionante, con las victorias en los Juegos Olímpicos y el Mundial de ruta…

Sí, básicamente una temporada perfecta. ¿Crees que aún tiene margen de mejora?

Aún puede progresar, pero ahora se está centrando en ser mejor con la bici de montaña, de modo que se trata más de mejorar en otras disciplinas.

Pero en cuanto a ciclismo en ruta, ¿consideras que ya alcanzó su tope con el oro olímpico del pasado año?

Sí, sí. Pero de eso se trataba precisamente; era su objetivo principal como ciclista, y todo lo que le llegue desde entonces en la ruta es básicamente un bonus para ella.
